Burmantofts faience was produced by the Leeds Fireclay Company in Yorkshire during the late nineteenth century. The Aesthetic Movement emphasised artistic beauty in everyday functional objects, leading to highly decorative architectural ceramics and domestic wares featuring relief patterns and rich, colourful glazes.

These pieces were typically cast or moulded from refined earthenware clay. They were decorated with relief motifs and coated in thick, translucent lead glazes in deep shades such as crimson, amber, green, or turquoise before being fired at high temperatures.

Authentic pieces are generally impressed on the base with the word BURMANTOFTS or the monogram BF alongside shape or pattern reference numbers. The distinctive glaze quality, crisp relief moulding, and heavy earthenware weight are also characteristic markers of production.
