Small Chinese Yixing Zisha Lobed Teapot Bird Finial Seal Marks Republic Period C.1930-40

An unusual and highly characterful Chinese Yixing zisha stoneware teapot and cover, conservatively dating to the Republic period, circa 1930s–1940.

The small teapot is modelled in an attractive naturalistic lobed flower form, with a compressed body divided into gently undulating sections. The fitted circular cover has a corresponding scalloped edge and is surmounted by a particularly charming stylised bird-form finial, modelled with prominent eye, pointed beak and crest.

The body incorporates a short, gently upturned pouring spout and substantial curved loop handle. The dark brown to purplish-brown stoneware has an appealing matt surface with subtle variations in colour and patination developed through age and handling.

Of particular interest is the large four-character impressed seal-script mark to the underside, which appears to read 邵大亨製 (Shao Daheng zhi) — literally “Made by Shao Daheng.”

Shao Daheng is the name of an important Yixing potter associated with the Qing dynasty. However, his name and seals were subsequently reproduced on later Yixing wares. This teapot is therefore catalogued as bearing a Shao Daheng mark and is not being represented as an authenticated work by Shao Daheng himself.

A further small impressed oval seal is present to the underside of the lid, providing another interesting feature for collectors of marked Yixing wares.

The combination of the compressed lobed body, scalloped cover, sculptural bird knop, dark zisha-type clay and multiple impressed seals gives this little teapot considerable decorative and collecting appeal.

On the available evidence, the piece is conservatively attributed to Chinese Republic-period / early-to-mid 20th-century production, circa 1930s–1940, rather than to the lifetime of Shao Daheng.

A fascinating and very attractive example for a collection of Chinese Yixing pottery, zisha teapots, Chinese tea wares or Republic-period ceramics.
