1930s Delcroft Ware Art Deco Green Oriental Geisha Jug Vase J T Fell No.727 18.5cm

A distinctive original 1930s English Art Deco pottery jug / vase by Delcroft Ware, model number 727, manufactured by J. T. Fell & Co. of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.

The unusually architectural body is strongly characteristic of the Art Deco period, with a tall angular form, deeply modelled geometric ribs, square-section foot and dramatically flared asymmetric rim.

Finished in an attractive soft celadon / pale jade-green glaze, with darker green pooling within the moulded recesses that accentuates the sculptural form.

Each principal face carries a raised Japanese / Oriental-inspired figure, one depicting a standing female figure with parasol and the opposing side showing a seated or kneeling figure beneath an umbrella. These stylised Eastern subjects reflect the continuing influence of Japonisme and Oriental design on British decorative ceramics during the inter-war period.

The angular handle is integrated into the geometric construction of the body rather than applied as a conventional rounded handle, adding considerably to its Art Deco character.

Delcroft Ware

Delcroft Ware was a trade name of J. T. Fell & Co. (Longton) Ltd, makers of decorative earthenware at Cyples Old Pottery, Longton. The company operated from 1923 until 1957 and produced a considerable range of Art Deco jugs, vases, animal models and decorative wares.

Model 727 is a documented Delcroft form and examples have appeared on the market described as Art Deco Oriental / Geisha jugs.

An attractive and relatively unusual example of inter-war Staffordshire Art Deco pottery, particularly appealing for collectors of Delcroft Ware, English Art Deco ceramics and Oriental-inspired decorative pottery.

Condition

Very good antique/vintage condition overall.

No obvious significant chips, cracks or restoration are visible in the photographs. There is expected fine age-related glaze crazing, minor manufacturing irregularities and light wear around the unglazed foot consistent with age. A few very small surface and foot marks are present.
