Rare Pearlware Strawberry Painted Sugar Sifter Spoon

Description

Totally charming, and rare, late 18th early 19th century antique staffordhsire/pearlware berry sifter spoon (also called a sugar sifter or fruit spoon).

Historically used in the 18th and 19th centuries to sprinkle powdered or caster sugar over fresh berries or fruit. The perforated bowl acts as a sieve to strain or dust sugar, while allowing excess liquid or unwanted seeds to drain off when serving.

This is a particularly fine example which features hand-painted strawberry and leaf motifs inside the perforated bowl, paired with a green trim around the rim and detail on the handle.

This nineteenth-century pearlware sugar sifter spoon takes the form of a long-handled ladle with a deep, circular bowl. The ceramic body carries a smooth white glaze decorated with hand-painted red strawberry fruits, green leaves, and delicate trailing vines around the interior basin. A vibrant green line edges the rim of the bowl, and a series of painted green dots and line work embellish the top of the handle, which terminates in a distinct ridged end. The bowl contains numerous pierced holes arranged in small leaf-shaped clusters to strain sugar and drain liquids during service.
