A Spode Porcelain Pastille Burner Decorated in Pattern 1166 C.1815-1820

Description

A Spode Porcelain Pastille Burner decorated in pattern 1166  c.1815-1820. The Pyramid shape pastille burner, with conical shape top with flamiform finial, the square base raised on four lions paw feet, finely painted in the highly desirable Regency-era pattern 1166 featuring luxurious decoration on fine bone china. This pattern is characterised by hand-painted floral sprays including roses and convolvulus set against a rich cobalt blue ground with intricate gilt scales and gilt mons. 

Spode’s pattern number 1166 was introduced circa 1806 and was one of the most sumptuous designs produced by Spode. Pattern 1166 was first recorded in about 1808. The pattern is ground laid in cobalt blue, hand painted and gilded on Spode's pure white bone china. It is gilded and painted entirely by hand. The combination of cobalt blue and gold is one of the most expensive in ceramic decoration as it is produced with 2 of the most expensive raw materials. This extravagance, coupled with these gorgeous flowers, makes this design one of the most magnificent to come out of the Spode factory.

This shape appears in the Spode 1820 Shape Book and is described as ''87 – Pyramid Incense Burner. One size.’’

Condition: Clean break to the finial which has been re-attached and re-gilded.
