19th Century Chinese Famille Rose Reticulated Chestnut Basket & Stand – Qing Dynasty

19th century
Description

A fine Chinese Qing dynasty famille rose porcelain chestnut basket with its matching stand, dating to the second half of the 19th century.

The oval basket is finely reticulated with pierced geometric latticework and decorated in the famille rose palette with colourful enamelled floral and foliate ornament. The pierced construction is characteristic of Chinese chestnut baskets, designed to allow steam from freshly roasted chestnuts to escape while they were being served.

Raised upon its corresponding shaped porcelain stand, the two pieces form an attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find complete ensemble. Surviving examples are frequently encountered without their original matching stand.

The form originated in Chinese export porcelain during the 18th century and continued into the Qing dynasty, when increasingly elaborate pierced porcelain and richly enamelled famille rose decoration appealed both to the domestic and export markets.

This example displays particularly attractive decorative detail and considerable craftsmanship in the extensive hand-cut reticulation. The combination of pierced porcelain, colourful enamelling and the complete basket-and-stand configuration gives the piece excellent decorative presence.

Accompanied by a fitted black presentation box.

Condition: Good antique condition overall. Two small chips are present, together with minor age-related wear consistent with a 19th-century porcelain piece. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.

A Famille Rose reticulated basket is an 18th or 19th-century Chinese export porcelain piece defined by its hand-pierced lattice walls and opaque pink-dominant enamel decoration. These openwork vessels were created to serve fruit or chestnuts at traditional dining tables.

These items are crafted from kaolin porcelain clay, hand-pierced with openwork cut-outs prior to firing, and painted with overglaze polychrome enamels. The Famille Rose color palette relies primarily on rose-pink enamel derived from colloidal gold.

Authentic 19th-century Qing dynasty pieces feature hand-painted overglaze enamel with tangible surface relief, slight variations in the hand-cut lattice, and natural wear along the unglazed foot rim. The glaze frequently exhibits fine orange-peel texture consistent with period kiln firing.

Place the basket as a decorative focal point on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece. The pierced openwork structure and polychrome enamels offer detailed texture when positioned against neutral, contemporary backdrops.

Clean reticulated porcelain using a dry, soft brush to remove dust from the lattice openings. Avoid submersing the item in water or using chemical detergents, as liquid can compromise unglazed areas or lift vintage gilding and overglaze enamels.
