A late 19thc large Japanese Imari charger c1900. This is a substantial charger decorated with the classic Imari colours of dark blue, red and gold. The charger depicts a vase and flowers at centre, surrounded by a deep decorative surround of geometric scalloped edge panels. A statement piece in excellent and remarkably good condition. No hairlines, cracks or chips.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese porcelain produced in the Arita region and exported from the port of Imari. It is defined by its characteristic palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, and gilding, featuring intricate floral and geometric motifs.

Traditional Imari ceramics were formed from kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures. Underglaze cobalt blue was painted before the initial glaze firing, after which iron-red enamels and gold highlights were applied over the glaze and fired a second time at a lower temperature.
