Brief Description:

Of cylindrical form, the jar has a warm buff-coloured stoneware body, which contrasts wonderfully with the deep olive-green glazed borders on the upper and lower sections.
Both borders are decorated with multiple raised horizontal bands, a design that continues across the original removable cover, which is surmounted by a small glazed knop finial.

The centre of the jar is particularly charming, being extensively decorated in stylised black script with a humorous tobacco-related verse.
The inscription reads:
“Were made none was known,
Tobacco to be a lone Man’s Companion,

a hungry Man’s Food,
a sad Man’s Cordial,
a wakeful Man’s Sleep,
and a chilly Man’s Fire.
There’s no herb like it under the Canopy of Heaven.”
The wording is associated with the celebrated description of tobacco in Charles Kingsley’s 1855 novel Westward Ho!, making the jar particularly interesting both as a piece of Royal Doulton and as an example of period social history.

The combination of the rich green glaze, warm buff ground and wonderfully characterful calligraphic lettering gives the piece tremendous decorative appeal.
Complete with its original matching lid, it displays beautifully both closed and with the cover positioned alongside, as illustrated in our photographs.

A fabulous piece for the Royal Doulton collector, tobacco and smoking-memorabilia collector, or simply as a highly decorative antique stoneware jar for a study, library or gentleman's interior.
