Impressive 19th Century Glazed Terracotta Dairy Salting Crock / Planter

19th century
For Sale by CJ Antiques
Description

A substantial and highly decorative late 19th-century English country pottery terracotta dairy crock or salting pot, possessing a wonderful rustic aesthetic. This large, hand-thrown earthenware vessel is of good proportions, standing 32cm high with a robust 36cm diameter rim. Designed historically for the preservation of meats, fish, or butter, the interior features its original wiped cream slip glaze for hygiene. The exterior is beautifully characterized by a rich, dark manganese-brown salt glaze that dramatically drips down the raw, unglazed terracotta body, showcasing a classic 'wabi-sabi' country kitchen utility finish. Retaining its two substantial, molded clay lug handles, the lower half of the unglazed clay has developed a superb, genuine weathered moss patina from decades of country house estate use. This authentic weathering makes it a spectacular, high-end garden planter for ferns, topiary, or alpines, as well as a striking interior accent piece for a rustic kitchen or garden room. Condition: Good, structurally sound antique condition with no structural hairline cracks or base leaks. Features an honest, historic chip to the upper rolled rim and typical surface wear/pit marks consistent with its utilitarian age and past farmhouse life. Dimensions: Width (Max Diameter): 36 cm (14.2")Height: 32 cm (12.6")

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In 19th-century rural dairies, terracotta salting crocks were utilitarian vessels used for curing, preserving, and salting meats, butter, or vegetables prior to widespread domestic refrigeration.

These vessels were hand-thrown using coarse earthenware clay and typically featured a protective slip or lead glaze on the upper rim and interior to render the porous ceramic watertight and hygienic.

Authentic period crocks display signs of hand construction, including subtle glaze drips, variation in wall thickness, integrated lug handles, and light surface wear consistent with functional utility.

These heavy ceramic vessels function effectively as garden planters, container displays on terraces, hearthside log stores, or indoor umbrella stands.

Clean the ceramic surface with warm water and a soft brush, avoiding chemical cleaners. If used outdoors, store the vessel under cover during winter to prevent frost-fracturing.
