Chinese Imari porcelain refers to ceramics produced during the Kangxi reign (16621722) of the Qing dynasty, characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilding. The style was adapted from Japanese Imari designs to satisfy European demand for vibrant decorative tableware.

These bowls were crafted from refined kaolin clay and petuntse, forming hard-paste porcelain. The primary foliage and structural outlines were painted using cobalt oxide before the initial high-temperature firing, after which iron-red enamels were applied over the glaze and fired a second time at lower temperatures.

Authentic pieces feature unglazed foot rims showing smooth porcelain clay, subtle hand-painted variations in glaze application, and age-consistent wear to overglaze enamels. The cobalt blue typically displays slight variation in depth under a clear, slightly bluish tinted glaze.

A Chinese Imari bowl can be placed centrally on a dark wood sideboard, displayed inside a glass cabinet, or styled on a mantelpiece as a standalone focal piece. Its combination of rich red and blue hues contrasts well against neutral painted walls or traditional mahogany furniture.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent applied with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, or immersing damaged porcelain in water, as moisture can compromise structural integrity or lift overglaze enamel decoration.
