Imari Porcelain Charger, Arita, Japan, C. 1700.

Description

A large Imari porcelain deep dish, Arita, Japan, c. 1700. The dish hand painted to the centre with a large panel containing a flowering plant emerging from a jardiniere.

The cavetto, with panels of bijin, on a red cell ground, divided by further panels of flowering plants.

Having a shaped rim, painted with flowerheads, and gilt floral scroll.

The reverse with flowering sprigs, above a continuous Ruyi head device, and whorl decoration to the footrim.

Several pronounced ‘spurs’ to the underside.

Diameter – 38 cm, 15”.

Depth – 8 cm, 3 1/8”.

Condition – Some typical age related wear to the gilt. Firing craze lines to the body. No damage. No restoration.
