Attributed to Samson, Paris, Footed Bowl in the Chelsea-derby Style, Late 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A substantial porcelain footed bowl attributed to Edme Samson of Paris and dating from the late nineteenth century. Decorated in the Chelsea-Derby style, the piece displays a deep cobalt-blue ground enriched with gilded ornament and finely painted floral reserves.

The exterior is arranged with oval flower panels framed by scrolling gilded foliage, above a carefully executed gilt brickwork border. The interior is centred by a floral bouquet and surrounded by smaller flower sprays, providing decoration across the entire surface.

Samson established a reputation for producing sophisticated interpretations of celebrated European porcelains. Their Chelsea and Derby-inspired wares were among the most successful creations of the workshop, often displaying a level of workmanship that led collectors to mistake them for much earlier originals.

The scale, colour and quality of decoration make this bowl particularly effective as a cabinet piece or centrepiece. Examples of this size are encountered less frequently than smaller decorative bowls and have strong collector appeal.

Chelsea-Derby style porcelain refers to ceramics produced following the merger of the Chelsea and Derby porcelain factories in 1769. The period combined Chelsea Neoclassical shapes with Derby gilding and delicate botanical enamelling, later widely imitated by 19th-century Continental workshops.

Samson of Paris crafted vessels using hard-paste porcelain, decorated with polychrome enamels and applied gold leaf for hand-gilded accents, imitating the soft-paste originals of earlier eras.

Samson items are often marked with pseudo-factory marks, such as a Samson S or modified versions of original factory marks, and are distinguished by their hard-paste porcelain body rather than soft-paste ceramic.

A decorative porcelain footed bowl functions effectively as a central display on a dining table, a focal point atop a mahogany sideboard, or housed within a glazed china cabinet.

Hand-painted porcelain with gilding should be cleaned gently using warm water and a mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive cloths, chemical cleaners, or submersion in water.
