Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and was historically exported to Europe through the port of Imari beginning in the 17th century. These chargers became prominent decorative display items, characterised by rich colour palettes designed to complement classical European and Asian interiors.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The decoration incorporates underglaze cobalt blue paint combined with overglaze enamel colours, predominantly iron red, rust tones, and gilded accents applied in subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces from around 1900 typically feature hand-painted brushwork with subtle variations, spur marks on the base from kiln firing supports, and a distinctive palette of dark cobalt blue paired with iron red. Weight, slight surface unevenness, and visible gilding wear also indicate age.

A large Imari charger can be placed on a plate stand atop a sideboard or console table to serve as a focal point. Alternatively, securing the plate to a wall using a protective wire hanger creates visual interest within a gallery wall arrangement.
