During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, ceramic scale plates were produced for grocers, butchers, and merchants as hygienic weighing surfaces. Pottery plates replaced metal surfaces because earthenware and ironstone did not corrode when exposed to salt, moisture, or raw foodstuffs.
