Description

A rather beautiful and rare flow blue foot bath by Dillwyn, circa 1835-40. It comes with a deep flow blue, a banded foot bath with these great handles.

In lovely condition. A small amount of glaze flaking on the one side. Please see images.

Body 16.25 x 12 x 9.5 inches high

Flow blue is a style of white glaze earthenware decorated with cobalt blue transfer patterns that intentionally bled into the surrounding glaze during firing, produced extensively throughout the nineteenth century.

These vessels were crafted from durable earthenware or ironstone, moulded into deep oval forms with integrated side handles, and finished with underglaze transfer printing prior to glaze firing.

Authentic examples exhibit deep cobalt colouration with characteristic blurred edges, underglaze maker marks or impressed stamps, and natural age indicators such as fine glaze crazing.

These large decorative basins are frequently repurposed in contemporary spaces as hearth planters, dining table centrepieces, or console displays filled with seasonal foliage.

Clean gently using mild soap and lukewarm water, avoiding chemical solvents, abrasive pads, or prolonged immersion which can damage crazed glazes or affect the earthenware body.
