Rare original English Staffordshire pottery figure of the Lion and the Lamb, circa 1850.
A pleasing pottery decorative animal sculpture, finely modelled and coloured in the round.
Associated with the visit to Great Britain of American lion tamer Isaac Van Amburgh in the 1840s where he caused a sensation with his spectacular act.
The lion laying down with the lamb is also biblical imagery with underlying symbolism both as a prophecy of the messianic age of universal peace and said by Saint Augustine to represent Christ''s sacrifice as the lamb and his resurrection as a lion.
This figure is unusual, the grey colour can some-times be found on the upright figure of Van Amburgh with a single standing lion but is rare in this Lion and Lamb figure.
In excellent bright sound condition with no damage or repair.
Height 8,3/4'' or 222mm.
Weight 662 grams.
