Masons ironstone was patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England, creating durable stoneware designed to imitate imported Chinese porcelain decorated with European interpretations of East Asian motifs.

These items were manufactured using dense vitreous ironstone earthenware, decorated with dark cobalt blue glaze, overglaze enamels, and hand-applied gold leaf gilding.
