A Late 19th Century Chinese Shiwan Pottery Tiger Circa 1880

This fine and early example of Chinese Shiwan pottery is brilliant. It is produced in the brown clay this type of ware is renowned for. This figure is of a prowling, muscular tiger snarling and climbing onto a rocky ledge. It is of the finest workmanship with incredible detail, especially to the head, mouth, teeth, paws and the hand textured fur. In addition, natural hair was used for the whiskers and eyebrows, now with only remnants remaining. The body of the tiger is finished with hand painted very natural looking stripes and the teeth and claws by contrast are glazed pure white. The rocky ledge is fully glazed in a distinctive marbleised white and black glaze. This stunning pottery sculpture is in excellent original condition. Unmarked, later examples had various factory marks, early examples did not.
