Good Pair of 19th Century Chinese Dogs of Foe Sancai

Description

This is a good pair of Sancai glaze Chinese Dogs of Fo in excellent condition dating from around 1900.

The pair are beautifully modelled with great style and character and are in the Sancai colours of green, brown and cream that is characteristic of the Tang Dynasty.

The pair are individually modelled, one holding a cub in the front paw the other with his paw on a pierced ball.

These have open mouths with teeth and fangs protruding and stunning stylised swirling fur to their coats which gives them dramatic appeal.

The dogs are a good size measuring 22 cms high by 20 cms wide by 15 cms deep.

These are in perfect condition with no damage or restoration.

Foo Dogs, or Chinese Imperial Guardian Lions, are symbolic protective figures traditionally placed at entrances to ward off negative energy. Sancai, which translates to three colours, refers to a polychrome glazing technique developed during the Tang Dynasty and continued through the Qing Dynasty, characterized by lead-based glazes in shades of green, amber, and cream.

These figures are sculpted from earthenware or stoneware clay and painted with low-fired lead glazes. During the firing process in the kiln, the glazes melt and flow slightly, creating blended, glossy finishes across the textured surfaces of the ceramic.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature traditional iconography, including a male lion with a ball beneath its paw and a female with a cub. Glaze pooling, minute kiln firing marks, crazing, and light wear to the unglazed base areas typically indicate appropriate period manufacture.
