Rare Matching Pair Royal Bayreuth Hunting Fox Candlesticks Candle Holders

1920 - 1940
Description

EXTREMLEY RARE AND IN MINT CONDITION

This is rare opportunity indeed to purchase a matched pair of Royal Bayreuth candle holders in the form of foxes dressed in traditional English hunting attire.

Royal Bayreuth is a famous manufacturer of porcelain since 1794 and originally based at Tettau in the midst of the Thuringia Forest in Bavaria, Germany.

They were renowned not only for the superior quality of their porcelain but also for the fabulous range of models and designs. Each piece is unique as they are hand painted and the vibrant colours used especially on the fruit, vegetables and animals is quite incredible.

This pair of candle holders is probably the rarest and most sought after of all Royal Bayreuth pieces, they are a matched pair with the fox and vixon facing in opposite directions and of course the colouring or markings are different and one is fractionally taller than the other which is the case if you study foxes in the wild.

The expressions on their faces and the way the eyes are turning is quite enchanting and the colour of the hunting jacket bold and vibrant.

As you would expect both are fully marked on the base with 'Registration applied for RD No 726518'

They stand at just over 6" tall.

The condition is quite incredible with absolutely no chips, crazing or restoration.

The pair of candle holders are rare and this is a unique opportunity to acquire an item which even the Royal Bayreuth Museum doesn't possess, a must for every collector.

We only use natural daylight for our photographs, they have not been digitally remastered and no coloured lenses have been used to enhance them.

One fox was sold at auction in the United States in 2002 for $18,000.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Royal Bayreuth porcelain was produced by the Privilegierte Porzellanfabrik Tettau in Bavaria, Germany, founded in 1794. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the factory gained international renown for manufacturing imaginative novelty items, including anthropomorphic animal pitchers, sugar bowls, and candle holders.

These items were crafted using fine hard-paste porcelain cast in detailed slip moulds. The pieces were subsequently hand-painted with ceramic glazes and enamels before undergoing high-temperature kiln firing to achieve a durable, glossy finish.

Authentic pieces typically feature the makers mark on the base, such as the blue or green crest featuring stylized suns or lions, accompanied by the text Royal Bayreuth Bavaria. Original items display precise moulding details, clean glaze lines, and lightweight, translucent porcelain construction.

Figurative candlesticks function well as decorative accents on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or bookshelf. Placing them symmetrically in an English Country or traditional interior scheme highlights their sculpted details and vibrant glaze colours.

Clean porcelain items using a soft microfiber cloth and tepid water mixed with mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. To remove residual candle wax, immerse the affected area in warm water to soften the wax gently rather than scraping the glazed surface.
