Imposing 18th Century Derby porcelain Figure of Zeus / Jupiter, with eagle perched at feet, on naturalistic base, approx. 36cms (14"). Superb and vividly decorated with purple, green and reds, with gilt highlights. Eagle beautifully sculptured. Rare piece.

Condition: Good condition, some losses around bottom of robe and fingers. Other minor losses commensurate with age. Over 200 yrs old.

Established in the mid-eighteenth century, the Derby porcelain manufactory in England became renowned for producing high-quality ceramic figures, particularly under William Duesbury. During the late Georgian period, the factory produced figures depicting classical mythology, allegory, and literary characters, catering to the taste for Neoclassical taste among wealthy patrons.

Early Derby figures were modelled from soft-paste porcelain clay containing bone ash or soapstone, which produced a delicate, translucent body. The figures were decorated by hand using overglaze enamel pigments and finished with gold leaf gilding before a final low-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces often feature patch marks on the underside of the base where the item rested on clay pads during firing. Additionally, period pieces display characteristic soft-paste glaze warmth, incised model numbers, and hand-painted marks such as the crossed batons, crown, and D mark in red or blue.

Classical ceramic sculptures function well as accent pieces when placed on traditional mantelpieces, open bookshelves, or sideboards. Juxtaposing antique porcelain against dark paint tones or minimalist furniture creates visual contrast and adds historic character to a modern interior.
