Description

This CANEWARE GAME PIE DISH dates from circa 1860.

It is finely decorated with fern leaves and flowers with a handle formed as a GAME BIRD.

During the 19th Century, when flour was in short supply, these Dishes were made to resemble Pie Crust. A simple stew could then be transformed into a fine looking Homemade Pie when taken to the table.

This particular model has been very well decorated with sharp outlines to the leaves.

Condition: Two small chips to the rim, a hairline running down the seam for approximately 2 inches (5 cm) and the Game Bird handle has been reattached to the cover at some time.
