Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Gilt decoration rubbed on high points: handling wear from domestic use.
Glazed underside without maker or import marks: manufacture before late-Victorian marking rules.
Hand-painted enamel details on the face: traditional mid-Victorian Staffordshire decorating shop work.
Moulded two-piece earthenware body: standard nest-tureen production technique.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Staffordshire egg crock dates from circa 1860 and takes the form of a hen sitting upon a nest. Modelled in white earthenware with a high-gloss glaze, the piece features moulded feather textures across the bird, a green-tinted interior base, and delicate gilt accents highlighting the wings and crest. The lower section is formed as a woven basketweave container, supporting the nesting hen lid with an upright, plumed tail. Standing 16.5 cm high, 19 cm wide and 14 cm deep, the crock makes a practical and decorative storage vessel. Today, this antique ceramic fits well on a kitchen island or pantry shelf to hold eggs or small kitchen accessories, bringing a rustic farmhouse touch to a country-style interior. The structure remains in good condition with no restoration present.

FAQs

Staffordshire hen-on-nest egg crocks are decorative earthenware storage vessels produced predominantly in Staffordshire, England, during the nineteenth century. Designed as two-piece covered dishes, the upper section features a nesting chicken while the base resembles a woven basket.

These items were typically constructed from press-moulded earthenware, finished with a white lead glaze, underglaze or overglaze enamel accents, and subtle gilding along the feathers and crest.

Authentic Victorian examples often feature unglazed interior rim edges, fine glaze crazing, soft moulding details, and an unmarked base or simple impressed mould numbers rather than modern printed stamps.

A hen crock functions well as a practical or decorative display piece on a kitchen island, open shelf, or timber dresser, providing a traditional focal point in country-style interiors.

Glazed ceramics should be hand washed gently using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding prolonged soaking, abrasive pads, or dishwashers that could degrade the gilding.
