Late Georgian black transfer bat printed Childs Toy Tea Set, circa 1820

Charming pearlware pottery printed with designs after Adam Buck of childhood and mother and child.

Consists of six cups and saucers, teapot, milk jug, sucrier and slop bowl.

Some prints are faded but most are good and sharp.

The main damages are all shown in the last group photo

re;

crow foot glued breaks to the edges of two cups

glued corner chip to sucrier lid

rim chip to one saucer, feint rim hairline to another

nibbled rim to teapot spout

other very minor imperfections and wear.

Saucers 4,1/4" or 107mm diameter

Cups 2,1/2" or 64mm diameter

gross weight 1117 grams

FAQs

Pearlware is a refined white earthenware introduced in the late eighteenth century, featuring a cobalt-tinted glaze that creates a pale blue hue in pools. Transfer printing allowed detailed copperplate engravings, such as bat-printed illustrations, to be impressed directly onto the ceramic surface before firing.

These miniature sets were predominantly manufactured using pearlware or creamware earthenware bodies. The surface decorations were applied using lead glazes and monochrome or polychrome ceramic inks via copperplate transfer prints.

Authentic pieces generally display fine stipple-engraved print lines, a slight bluish pool of glaze near footrims or handles, and natural age-related crazing. They frequently lack modern printed maker marks, instead bearing impressed tally marks or remaining entirely unmarked.

Miniature ceramics are best styled within glass display cabinets, arranged on acrylic or wooden step risers, or positioned on a sideboard top alongside framed monochrome prints to highlight the detailed transferwork.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry brush. Avoid immersing crazed porous earthenware in water or using harsh chemical cleansers, as moisture can seep beneath the glaze and cause internal discolouration.
