A Pair of Staffordshire Figures by Lloyd of Shelton

A fine pair of Staffordshire earthenware figures attributed to John and Rebecca Lloyd of Shelton. The pair are beautifully modelled as a sleeping shepherd and shepherdess. The shepherd has an apple green jacket, a dog at his feet and his crook leaning at his side. The shepherdess has a beautifully decorated costume with gilded details, and has a sheep at her side. John and Rebecca Lloyd are regarded as one of the best manufacturers in the Staffordshire potteries and pioneered the use of shredded clay as can be seen in these figures. The pair do have an attribution to the base and I would agree completely with it. The figures are in good antique condition with no restoration but the shepherdess does have a chip to her hat. A fine and rare pair of the best quality Staffordshire figures C.1840.
