Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Segmented timber core visible in profile: oval frame joinery before steam bending.
Carved palm fluting and trailing flower heads: distinctive Neo-Classical design.
Red bole showing through rubbed high points: layered water gilding on gesso ground.

This large Georgian wall mirror dates from the eighteenth century, specifically between 1760 and 1800, and is built in the English Country House style. The piece comprises an oval frame constructed from giltwood with a glass mirror plate and gold leaf finish. The frame exhibits acanthus leaf carving, egg and dart trim, and gilded relief work, showing a mellow look from Victorian re-gilding with minor nibbles to the gesso and carving. The frame contains a nineteenth-century mirror plate, and the object measures 94 cm high, 84 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. In a modern interior, this wall mirror suits placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The construction combines traditional joinery and hand-carved elements, presenting visible signs of age including minor gesso wear and nineteenth-century glass replacement. The warm gold colour of the frame and the relief ornamentation function as decorative wall furnishings for period properties and traditional rooms.

FAQs

Georgian giltwood mirrors from the mid-to-late 18th century are characterised by hand-carved timber frames coated in gesso and finished with genuine gold leaf. Designs frequently incorporated Rococo, Neoclassical, or Chippendale motifs such as acanthus leaves, scrolls, and symmetrical oval forms.

The frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, sealed with gesso plaster, and finished using water or oil gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf. Period mirrors were fitted with hand-blown plate glass, often showing slight distortions or silvering degradation.

Authentic pieces display signs of natural age, including minor wear to the gold leaf that reveals the underlying reddish clay bole or white gesso. The backboards are usually hand-sawn timber with oxidised iron nails, and hand-carved relief work exhibits subtle irregularities.

Positioning a large oval giltwood mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard creates an impactful focal point. The warm metallic tones bridge traditional architecture with contemporary neutral colour palettes while reflecting light across the room.

Dust the carved frame regularly using a very soft, dry brush or feather duster. Never use liquid polish, water, or chemical cleaners, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso sealant and cause the delicate gold leaf to flake off.
