Introduction

Antique Oak Mirrors

The form you'll meet most often is a wall-hung oak frame, plain or carved. 'Wall' appears in 183 titles and 'carved' in 170, and 'large' qualifies 138 of them, so the usual sight is a sizeable carved oak wall mirror rather than a small hall glass. Shapes run to rectangular, oval, circular, octagonal and cushion.

Oak framing spread as plate glass got cheaper through the 19th century, filling halls, bedrooms and the space over the fireplace in Britain and northern France. It suited the revival tastes of the day, Gothic, Jacobean and later Arts and Crafts, because it takes deep carving and shows its figure without veneer.

Beyond the wall mirror sit four smaller groups. Cheval and floor-standing mirrors account for about one in ten, some with barley-twist uprights. Table-top dressing, toilet and vanity mirrors make a steady tenth. Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic frames bring limed and bleached surfaces with copper and repoussé brass mounts. French mirrors run to roughly a tenth, including Breton, Henri II and trumeau frames.

Dating is loose in this category. Of 617 listings, 322 carry a clean year, and the vague '19th Century' is the largest period label, used much as 'Victorian', 'Edwardian' and 'Georgian' are. The weight sits in the late Victorian to early 20th century, with a second cluster in the 1920s and 30s, the 1920s alone supplying 99 listings.

What Sets Them Apart

Carving does most of the work. Plain 'oak framed mirror' descriptions sit at the bottom, while the upper reaches carry named subjects: Green Men, lions and griffins in the pediment, an eagle, a bull, a dragon, a stag's head, an ouroboros snake. Depth matters as much as the subject, and hunting-lodge and Gothic work turns up throughout.

Scale runs the same way. The highest-priced pieces are recorded by height in their own titles, 7ft tall, H174cm, one at H6ft7", and 'small' appears in only eight titles across the archive. Monumental carved overmantels hold the top of the range; plain 1920s and 1930s oak wall mirrors hold the bottom, with cheval and overmantel forms in the middle and above.

Then the additions. Gilt, parcel-gilt, gesso, ormolu and mercury plate glass push a frame upwards, as do copper and repoussé brass mounts on Arts and Crafts examples. Pollard, burr and figured oak sit above plain oak, and a pair carries more than a single glass; the archive has produced a set of four and a set of six.

The Antique Oak Mirrors Glossary

Overmantel
Also written overmantle or over mantle, a mirror made to sit above a fireplace, often wide and sometimes with a shelf or several plates. Sixty or more titles use one of the spellings.
Cheval
A full-length mirror swinging between two floor-standing uprights, named in 61 titles. Some have barley-twist, meaning spiral-turned, uprights.
Toilet mirror
A small swing-frame glass for a dressing table or chest, also listed as a dressing or vanity mirror. 'Dressing' appears in 36 titles.
Bevel
An angled, polished border ground into the edge of the glass. Ten titles mention it.
Convex
A domed plate that curves outward and throws a wide reflection. Only 14 titles in 617 carry one, and one of those is a pair.
Pollard oak
Timber from a tree cut back repeatedly, giving dense knotty figure. Nine titles name it, and burr and figured oak appear alongside.
Bleached, limed, scrubbed
Pale surface treatments on the oak, with blonde and 'dry oak' used the same way. Golden oak sits at the other end of the tonal range.
Questions people ask

Antique Oak Mirrors: Frequently Asked Questions

How common are oak mirrors on Sellingantiques?

Around 64 come up in a year, and 133 different dealers have offered one. That spread tells you it's a category almost every general dealer touches rather than a specialist field.

The archive runs to 617 listings, dated between 1800 and 1930.

What shapes do oak mirror frames come in?

Rectangular frames dominate, with oval the most-named alternative at 37 titles. Octagonal, circular and cushion shapes follow behind.

Cushion means a plump, outward-swelling moulding. Convex plates, domed rather than flat, are unusual in this category at 14 titles.

Are French oak mirrors part of this category?

Yes. 'French' appears in 62 titles, roughly a tenth of the archive, and includes Breton, Henri II, Louis XV revival, trumeau and chateau frames.

Beyond France, foreign origins are thin. A single Swedish and a single Dutch mirror turn up across the whole sample.

Which carved subjects turn up on the frames?

Green Men are a recurring note, along with lions and griffins in pediments. An eagle, a bull, a dragon, a stag's head and an ouroboros snake all appear in the archive.

Foliate scrollwork and egg-and-dart mouldings run alongside the figural carving, often on Gothic and Jacobean revival frames.

Do oak mirrors come as pairs or sets?

They do. Twenty-eight titles say 'pair', and the archive has produced a set of four and a set of six oak wall mirrors.

Multiples generally sit above single glasses of comparable size and carving.

What are shop and outfitters mirrors?

Tall trade mirrors made for drapers and tailors. 'Shop' appears in ten titles, with 'outfitters' recurring beside it.

They form a small but persistent thread through the category, usually full-height pieces.
