Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Wide bevelled edge to the plate: hand-ground plate glass.
Corner blocks with turned roundels: architectural framing common around 1900.
Solid oak frame with reeded mouldings: joinery of the Edwardian period.
Slight desilvering along the bevel edge: natural ageing of early mirror glass.
Brass eyelet plates on the frame sides: period hanging fixings.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian overmantel mirror is made from oak with a medium brown timber finish. The rectangular frame has bevelled glass, reeded moulding along the sides, and square corner rosettes set into the upper corners. A small white repair patch is stuck to the glass surface, and the dealer notes that the button needs to be glued on. The piece measures 128 cm high and 108 cm wide. Suitable for an English Country House aesthetic, the mirror is designed to hang in a domestic interior, typically positioned above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or bedroom. The clean wooden construction provides a traditional focal point while reflecting light around the space.

An overmantel mirror is a large wall-mounted mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They gained widespread popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras as central focal points in formal reception rooms.

Mirrors from this period were predominantly crafted using solid English or European oak with reeded mouldings and carved corner rosettes. The reflective plates were traditionally made of thick float glass, often finished with a hand-cut bevelled edge and backed with solid panelling.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit natural wood oxidisation, original timber backboards fastened with slotted iron screws, and faint age-related foxing to the glass plate. The frame construction often displays traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved or machine-turned corner details typical of circa 1900 design.

Position the mirror above a contemporary or traditional fireplace mantel to reflect light and expand the visual space of a room. Alternatively, hang it above a dining room sideboard or entryway console table to contrast warm natural timber textures against neutral wall palettes.

Clean the glass using a soft microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water or a mild glass cleaner, avoiding contact between liquids and the wooden frame. Dust the oak frame regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber without damaging the original finish.
