Gilded frames became a fixture of European rooms from the late 17th century, once glass manufacture allowed large plates and the frame carried the display rather than the glass alone. Overmantel and pier mirrors were made for set architectural positions, above a fireplace or in the wall between two windows, and stayed a standard reception-room fitting through the 19th century.
The archive leans hard on the 19th century: "19th" appears in 2,384 titles, and where dealers give a decade it clusters on the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s. More than a quarter of dated listings say only "19th Century", and "Victorian" and "Regency" work the same way, as loose labels rather than years. Eighteenth-century material is thin, and the 1890s and 1900s tail off into Edwardian and early 20th-century revival frames.
Two shapes dominate. The broad rectangular or arch-topped overmantel accounts for 1,905 titles between the two spellings dealers use, and the smaller oval or shaped wall mirror runs to 643 "oval" titles, from small Edwardian pieces up to large giltwood examples. French and English are the two named origins, French the commoner of the two, with named French styles such as Louis Philippe far more frequent than any English equivalent.
Around the edges sit the Regency and Georgian group of convex, pier and girandole mirrors, spread across the whole price range, plus trumeaux and frames that are not gold at all: silver gilt, parcel gilt, painted and gilt, ebonised and gilt. Odd one-offs turn up too, a horseshoe overmantel, a Spanish toleware sunburst, a set of four Florentine wall mirrors.
What Sets Them Apart
Construction is the first divide. Carved wood faced with gesso sits above moulded plaster or composition on a timber carcass, and dealers say so: "carved wood" runs to 1,034 titles and "wood gesso" to 804, spread right across the range, while frames titled as plaster or composition gather at the lower end. The small circular convex and oval mirrors of the early 20th century, some in gilt brass or plaster, sit at the bottom.
Scale pushes upward hard. "Large" appears in 2,291 titles, and the upper reaches of the archive are described as very large, extra large, monumental or grand scale, or simply given a measurement: 79 inches tall, 218cm for a French trumeau, six foot six. The highest-priced piece in the archive is a Regency carved giltwood overmantel pier mirror of that order of size.
Two other things lift a frame. A named period or dynasty does it, since 18th-century and Georgian attributions carry the top of the range while an undated "antique gilt mirror" title sits at the foot of it. So do multiples, with 309 titles mentioning a pair, and pairs of pier, oval and girandole mirrors recurring. Original glass is worth naming on its own account: mercury plate, foxed mercury glass, original bevelled glass.

- Overmantel
- A mirror made to hang above a chimneypiece, usually wider than it is tall. Dealers spell it overmantle as often as overmantel, so both spellings turn up in titles.
- Gesso
- A chalk-and-size ground built up over the wood carcass, then carved or moulded before gilding. It appears in 1,119 titles.
- Giltwood
- Carved timber that has been gilded. Used as one word in 283 archive titles and more often again in current stock.
- Parcel gilt
- Only partly gilded, the rest left as bare or polished timber. Mahogany and walnut frames especially.
- Pier mirror
- A tall, narrow mirror made for the pier of wall between two windows. Convex mirrors are the other Regency staple, a domed circular plate in a moulded frame, sometimes with an eagle crest.
- Trumeau
- A French tall panel mirror, often combining a painted panel with the glass. A girandole, by contrast, carries candle branches or sconces on the frame itself.

Are gilt mirrors ever signed?

Why are so many dated only to the 19th century?
Because that's what the dealer-supplied date field holds. Of 6,465 listings, 3,503 carry a clean year, and the commonest single entry is the broad "19th Century", used 1,675 times.
Where decades are given they bunch on the 1880s, 1860s and 1870s, with the 1850s behind them. "Victorian" and "Regency" appear as labels in the same way, covering a span rather than a year.
How common are French gilt mirrors?
Common. "French" appears in 1,670 titles against 930 for English, and 349 titles pair French with the 19th century.
Named French styles are commoner than named English ones. Louis Philippe alone accounts for 208 titles, with Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon III turning up besides, along with bistro and cushion mirrors.
Do all gilt mirrors have gold frames?
No. Silver gilt runs to 164 titles, parcel gilt to 212, painted and gilt to 211, ebonised and gilt to 122. All four are established sub-types rather than oddities.
Parcel gilt frames leave part of the timber showing, mahogany and walnut most often, so the gilding picks out mouldings and carved detail against bare wood.
