What They Are
Giltwood mirrors are looking glasses framed in carved wood finished in gold leaf, usually over a gesso ground. The frame is the subject: "gilt" leads the titles, with "carved", "gesso" and "wood" close behind, while the plate itself is named in only a small number. Sizes run from oval and convex hangers around 40 by 30cm up to overmantels and pier glasses quoted at 246cm tall.

What Separates Them
Carving is the first divide. Frames described as hand-carved or finely carved sit at the top of the range; plain "gilt gesso" and "gilt framed" pieces, where the ornament is moulded rather than cut, cluster at the bottom. Scale works the same way. "Large" appears in nearly a quarter of titles against a handful saying small, and the highest-priced are described as massive or of large proportions.
Age pulls hard. George I, George II and Queen Anne frames sit in the top reaches, while Edwardian, 1920s and revival-style work sits low. Pairs lift a mirror well above its single equivalent, whether girandoles, ovals or Italian frames. So does an attribution: the very few titles citing a gilder, a cabinetmaker or "in the manner of" all fall high.
The glass matters less often than you'd think, because so few titles mention it. When they do, three words recur: original, mercury and foxed. An original plate is worth stating, and dealers state it. The bottom of the range is almost entirely single small gilt-gesso wall and pier mirrors of the later 19th century.
