This large 1890 French Rococo style overmantle mirror sits within an arched wooden frame finished in gold leaf over gesso, featuring an elaborate crested cartouche and acanthus leaf carvings alongside decorative scrollwork. The original bevelled glass plate retains authentic signs of age, including subtle spotting and surface wear across the silvering. Hand-carved floral flourishes decorate the corners and sides of the frame, complemented by sweeping serpentine mouldings along the top edge. Measuring 159 cm high by 103 cm wide, the piece commands attention when positioned above a fireplace mantel in a traditional living room, grand hallway, or dining space. It brings classic French chateau elegance to interior settings, reflecting natural light while serving as a decorative focal point.

French Rococo overmantel mirrors are characterised by asymmetrical curves, elaborate acanthus leaf carving, C-scrolls, and prominent central crests. Designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, they feature arched frames that accentuate ceiling height.

Historically, frames were carved from solid timber such as pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso (chalk and glue composition), and detailed with hand-moulded ornamentation. Water gilding using thin gold leaf was applied over a red or yellow clay base known as bole.

Authentic pieces show natural signs of age, including subtle cracking in the gesso (craquelure), wear exposing the underlying red or dark clay bole, and mercury-silvered mirror glass with light oxidisation or dark spots near the edges.

An overmantel mirror functions as a focal point above a fireplace or console table. In contemporary spaces, the reflective surface enhances natural light while the ornate gilded frame provides architectural contrast against minimalist backdrops.

Dust the gilded surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent chipping fragile leaf work. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or liquid polishes, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso grounds and strip original gilding.
