A Victorian gilt overmantel mirror is a large decorative mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Produced predominantly in the nineteenth century, these mirrors typically feature arched or rectangular frames finished with gesso and gold leaf to reflect candlelight and natural room light.

Nineteenth-century frames were constructed from carved timber, often pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso plaster. Artisans then applied thin gold leaf over a clay bole base using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before fitting silvered plate glass.

Authentic period pieces display signs of natural age, including fine craquelure lines in the gesso, slight oxidisation spots on the glass plate, and dark wood backing boards secured with hand-cut nails.
