Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century English gilt overmantel mirror is characterised by a flat-bottomed frame designed to rest on a fireplace mantel, often featuring an arched top and wooden framework embellished with moulded gesso decorative elements before being gilded with gold leaf.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak bases covered with sculpted gesso, a mixture of chalk and binder, to create ornate relief patterns. Gold leaf was applied over a clay base called bole, while silvered glass formed the reflective plate.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, natural oxidisation or dark spots on the original mercury or silvered mirror glass, and subtle wear to the gold leaf showing the reddish or grey clay bole underneath.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or atop a large sideboard to anchor the room. The warm metallic tones create contrast against matte paint finishes and balance both traditional and contemporary furniture arrangements.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso and remove thin gold leaf. Clean the glass plate carefully by spraying cleaner onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to prevent liquid seeping behind the frame.
