Gilding dominates. The word 'gilt' appears in 626 of 1,292 titles, before 'giltwood', 'gilded' and 'gilt wood' are counted separately, and 'gesso' in 107. What you are most likely to meet is a gilded oval wall mirror of the second half of the 19th century into the Edwardian years, sometimes described as an overmantel where it was made to sit above a chimneypiece.
The next group down is plain timber: mahogany in 103 titles, oak in 40, with walnut and beech turning up too, often with bevelled glass and sometimes inlaid. Carving is the first divide. Frames described as carved wood, carved giltwood or timber gilt sit in the upper part of the sampled range, while plaster gilt and wood gesso examples, where the ornament is composition moulded over a carcass, sit lower. Both are gilded and both read as gold from across a room.
Size does the rest of the work. 'Large' appears in 256 titles, and the top of the range is thick with 'very large', 'huge' and 'monumental', including a classical wall mirror stated at 260cm high and a pair at 6'6". Pairs push up on their own account: 'pair' is in 120 titles, and several of the highest-placed entries are pairs rather than single glasses.
Beyond that, titles specifying original plate, mercury plate or original glass run through the middle and upper range, and named earlier styling counts. Georgian, Regency and Adam-period descriptions, along with the small number of genuine 18th-century pieces, sit at the very top. Girandoles, oval mirrors carrying candle sconces, cluster in the middle and above.
