This large Victorian overmantle mirror dates from 1880 and comes in the English Country House style. The piece uses giltwood, gesso, and glass materials with a gold colour finish and wood-panelled back. The frame includes an arched top, a flat base, beaded trim along the edges, and a geometric carved moulding pattern, complete with small corner blocks at the bottom corners and original glass. Measuring 134 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the mirror has a glass width of 97 cm. Suitable for domestic interiors today, the mirror finds a natural home mounted above the mantel in a living room, reception room, or bedroom. The proportions and reflection make it a practical architectural addition to traditional or period settings, adding light and a sense of space to the room while remaining faithful to its nineteenth-century origins.

Victorian archtop overmantel mirrors are defined by a gently curved upper rim, a flat base designed to rest directly on a fireplace mantelpiece, and decorative moulded frames featuring gold leaf finishes.

These mirrors were constructed using softwoods such as pine or lime for the frame backing, topped with applied gesso moulding, finished with gold leaf gilding, and fitted with silvered plate glass.

Authentic period mirrors display original timber backboards, evidence of hand-applied leafing with slight seam lines, natural oxidisation or light foxing on the glass, and historic mounting brackets on the frame sides.

Position the mirror centrally above a modern or historic fireplace mantel, or mount it above a hallway console table to reflect natural light and create architectural contrast within contemporary spaces.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the glass carefully with a slightly dampened cloth without touching the gilding.
