Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large decorative mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, originating in the late seventeenth century and becoming a central feature of nineteenth-century reception rooms.

These mirrors were typically constructed with a carved timber frame, often softwood such as pine or lime, coated with gesso and finished with hand-applied gold leaf over mercury-backed or silvered plate glass.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving beneath the gesso, subtle wear or red clay bole showing through worn gilding, period mercury glass oxidation, and original timber backing boards.

A large gilt mirror serves as an anchor point above a chimney breast or sideboard, drawing natural light into the room while contrasting against contemporary paint schemes or neutral wall tones.

Gilded frames should be dusted gently using a dry camel-hair brush or soft duster; liquid cleansers and damp cloths must be avoided as water dissolves the water-soluble gesso layer beneath the gold leaf.
