An overmantel mirror is a large decorative mirror designed specifically to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were crafted to reflect candlelight, enhancing light levels and visual scale in reception rooms.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved timber framework coated in gesso, a smooth plaster-like mixture of chalk and glue. Detailed ornamentation was moulded in gesso before fine gold leaf was applied over a clay bole foundation.
