Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gilt overmantel mirrors became widely popular during the 19th century as central design features in British drawing rooms. Designed to sit directly above a fireplace hearth, these mirrors were engineered to reflect both natural daylight and candlelight, visually expanding reception spaces.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or softwood, coated with layers of composition or gesso moulding, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf. The reflective panel consisted of silvered glass, which often exhibits subtle oxidation or foxing over time.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved wood backing boards, natural wear to the gilding showing red or grey bole underneath, and age-related patination on the glass mirror plate. The weight of the timber and gesso structure is also considerably heavier than modern reproductions.

An overmantel mirror is placed above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to serve as a focal point. Combining classical gilded moulding with modern neutral walls creates architectural contrast and maximizes light reflection across the room.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners which dissolve original gesso and gold leaf. Clean the glass panel separately using a lightly damp microfibre cloth without allowing liquid to seep beneath the frame edge.
