Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large decorative mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors feature grand architectural proportions, often with arched tops or giltwood frames, designed to capture and reflect light across the room.

19th-century gilt mirrors were predominantly constructed using hand-carved timber or pine frames overlaid with gessoa mixture of chalk and animal glue. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using oil or water gilding techniques to achieve a bright, metallic finish.

Authentic antique giltwood frames typically display subtle signs of age, such as fine hairline cracking (craquelure) in the gesso layer, exposed clay bole beneath worn gold leaf, hand-carved wooden backing panels, and natural oxidation or foxing on the glass mirror plate.

Position a large arched overmantel mirror above a chimney breast or rest it directly atop a wide console table to create a focal point. Combining the gilded detail and arched top with contemporary neutral paint tones provides a balanced blend of classical structure and modern minimalism.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry feather duster or dry camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture or harsh chemical cleaners that dissolve delicate water-gesso finishes. Clean the mirror plate using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, ensuring liquid does not run beneath the frame edge.
