This Victorian Rococo Revival overmantle mirror dates from 1860 and is constructed from giltwood, gesso, and glass in a gold colour. The piece features an arched top, an ornate carved central cresting decorated with acanthus leaves, heavy Rococo scrolls to the top corners, and scroll feet at the base. Visible details include deeply carved foliage decoration surrounding the frame and original backboards behind the plate glass. The mirror measures 128 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large decorative mirror is designed for placement above the mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or hallway. Its traditional English Country House aesthetic works well above an active fireplace or set against a plain chimney breast to reflect light and add architectural interest to the interior space.

FAQs

The overmantel mirror emerged in seventeenth-century Europe as a decorative feature designed to accentuate the fireplace as the primary focal point of a room, reaching widespread popularity during the Victorian era.

Nineteenth-century frames were constructed using timber armatures covered in carved gesso or composition mouldings, which were then finished with hand-applied gold leaf over a clay bole foundation.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit signs of hand craftsmanship, such as joinery marks on the reverse, red or grey bole showing through worn gilding, and subtle oxidation or clouding in the original mirror glass.

An antique overmantel mirror can be mounted above a contemporary fireplace or positioned on a large console table to add architectural scale and reflect natural light throughout the room.

Giltwood frames should be dusted regularly using a soft feather duster or dry artist paintbrush, avoiding moisture or liquid cleaners that dissolve the water-bound gesso and damage the gold leaf.
