Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the mid-19th century, Louis Philippe mirrors are defined by their rounded upper corners, straight bottom edge, and understated moulding profile. They typically showcase water-gilded finishes over gesso with subtle beaded or floral inner slips.

These pieces were crafted with hand-carved wooden frames coated in coats of gesso, followed by a layer of red or yellow clay known as bole. Genuine gold leaf was applied to the bole and burnished, while the mirror plate comprised silvered glass backed by solid wood panels.

Authentic period pieces display natural wear where the gold leaf has worn down to reveal the underlying red bole and gesso. Additional markers include silvering oxidisation (foxing) on the glass and multi-board wooden backings secured with antique fasteners.

Interior designers frequently position overmantel mirrors directly above fireplace hearths or modern sideboards to create a focal point. The contrast between warm antique gilding and clean contemporary lines adds depth and reflects natural light.

Clean gilding gently using a soft, dry feather duster or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or chemical sprays that dissolve gesso. Glass cleaner should be applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the glass to prevent liquid seeping behind the frame.
