Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Broad bevelled edge following the shaped arch: plate grinding before automated machinery.
Gilding worn through to darker bole on raised areas: decades of careful dusting.
Light misting and spotting across the glass plate: oxidisation of the original silvering.
Pierced rocaille cresting with trailing floral sprays: French decorative taste of the 1860s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Napoleon III French wall mirror dates from the 1860 period and exemplifies the French Rococo style. Constructed from wood and gesso with a gold giltwood finish, the rectangular frame includes an arched top and a moulded design. Decorative elements comprise an ornate carved rocaille cresting at the apex, acanthus leaf details, scrollwork on the sides, and scrolled feet at the base, enclosing an original bevelled glass plate with minor age spotting and misting. The piece measures 204 cm high and 110 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this large mirror suits placement as a full-length floor standing piece in a hallway or bedroom, or positioned above the mantel in a reception room. It integrates readily into a French Chateau interior scheme, bringing traditional reflection and period character to living spaces.

FAQs

French Rococo mirrors are characterised by asymmetrical curves, leafy scrollwork, ornate rocaille crestings, and gilded frames that gained popularity during the eighteenth century.

These frames are constructed from carved timber layered with gesso plaster, which is polished and finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding over a clay bole base.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved joinery on the rear pine or oak backboards, red or yellow clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, and natural oxidisation on original silvered glass.

Positioning a large gilt mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or in an entryway creates contrast against neutral walls and reflects natural light across the room.

Dust the frame using a dry feather duster or soft bristles, avoiding water and liquid cleaners that can dissolve the underlying gesso foundation.
