Rococo mirror design, originating in 18th-century France, is defined by asymmetrical flourishes, elaborate C-scrolls, naturalistic motifs such as foliage and flowers, and extensive gilt finishes.

Traditional French Rococo mirrors were crafted from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf applied over coloured bole clay.

Authentic period gilt mirrors typically feature hand-carved timber joinery, dark grey or mercury-backed mirror glass with natural foxing, and visible hand-planing or square nails on the backboard.

A Rococo gilt mirror works effectively positioned above a minimalist console table or fireplace, creating visual balance by contrasting intricate historical carving with clean contemporary lines.

Dust gilded frames gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or velvet cloth, avoiding water and liquid chemical cleansers that dissolve gesso and strip gold leafing.
