Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Red bole showing through rubbed gilding: gold leaf over traditional water-gilded gesso.
Fine crazing across the shaped gesso mouldings: natural shrinkage over many decades.
Wide bevel contouring the inner frame: nineteenth-century plate cutting.
Darkened horizontal pine backboards: untouched period backing.

This nineteenth-century French Louis XV style trumeau mirror employs a giltwood and gesso frame finished in real gold leaf alongside visible old pale grey paint on both sides. The composition incorporates a crested pediment with a shell motif and acanthus leaf scrollwork, an arched inner frame, and two sections of bevelled glass with original backboards. Measuring 210 cm high and 110 cm wide, the piece operates as a freestanding floor mirror or overmantel. Suitable for domestic placement in an empty corner or above a fireplace, the furniture fills a full-length vertical span to reflect interior light. The structure accommodates a lower mirror plate paired with an upper replacement mirror glass section while preserving traditional stylistic proportions.

19th-century French gilt mirrors are characterised by ornate carved wooden or moulded gesso frames finished with gold leaf application. Popular during the Louis Philippe and Rococo Revival periods, these mirrors often feature elaborate cresting, bevelled glass plates, and floral or acanthus leaf motifs.

These mirrors typically feature a carved timber superstructure layered with composition or gesso before being gilded using water gilding or oil gilding techniques. The reflective glass was composed of heavy plate glass, often featuring hand-cut bevelled edges and mercury or silver backing.

Authentic period mirrors feature signs of age on the reverse, such as dark pine or oak backboards secured with traditional joinery or hand-cut fasteners. The gilding often shows natural wear, revealing red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf, along with minor oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate.

An ornate gilt mirror acts as a focal point when set against minimal, neutral walls or dark paint tones. Placing a large mirror opposite a window optimises natural light reflection, while leaning or mounting it adds architectural height to contemporary rooms.

Giltwood and gesso frames should be dusted gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Liquids must never be applied directly to the frame, while glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a cloth first to avoid seeping behind the frame rim.
