Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteeth-century French gilt mirrors are characterized by ornate carved wood frames overlaid with gesso and gold leaf. Influenced by classical Louis XVI and Neoclassical styles, these mirrors frequently feature elaborate top crestings with motifs such as birds, urns, floral garlands, and ribbons.

These mirrors were constructed using solid timber frames covered with gesso, a smooth mixture of chalk and binder. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, often combined with painted or burnished finishes.

Authentic period mirrors display signs of hand-carved joinery, natural wear to the gesso revealing red or yellow bole underneath, and slight oxidisation on the mirrored glass. The back boards typically consist of unpainted, hand-sawn timber panels secured with period nails.

Positioning a large French mirror above a fireplace mantel or leaning it against a neutral focal wall creates architectural height and reflects natural light. Balancing the detailed ornamentation of the frame with minimalist contemporary furniture highlights the structural silhouette of the mirror.

Dust the carved frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth to prevent flaking the delicate gesso and gilding. Avoid using liquid glass cleaners or damp cloths directly on the gilt surfaces, as moisture can dissolve historic adhesives.
