Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Chateau style mirrors originated during the 17th and 18th centuries, characterised by elaborate frames featuring Rococo and Baroque influences. They often include carved scrolling foliage, acanthus leaves, crestings, and a gilded finish intended to reflect candlelight and enhance natural light within grand rooms.

Traditionally, these mirror frames are constructed from carved timber, such as pine or lime wood, covered with layers of gesso plaster. Gold leaf is applied over a clay base known as bole, followed by burnishing, while the reflective surface consists of silvered glass.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboard, subtle cracking or distressing in the gesso plaster finish, and natural oxidisation or dark spots on the silvered glass reflection. Additional indicators include uneven gold leaf seams and evidence of historic red or yellow clay bole beneath worn gilding.

A large French leaner mirror can be positioned upright against a focal wall in a bedroom, dressing area, or hallway to create depth and visual scale. Combining the ornate gilded frame with clean-lined contemporary furniture produces a balanced contrast between historic details and modern minimalism.

Gilded finishes should be dusted gently using a dry, soft feather duster or microfiber cloth without applying liquid cleaners, which can dissolve water-gilded gesso. Glass surfaces ought to be cleaned by applying mirror cleaner directly to a cloth rather than spraying the glass to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame.
