This large antique French mirror from 1870 is executed in the Louis XVI style. The piece is constructed from carved wood, gesso, and glass, carrying a gold gilt finish throughout. The frame includes an ornate pediment with a central oval medallion crest, beaded moulding, foliate carving, and an arched inner frame, alongside an original mirror plate and backboards showing visible signs of age. The mirror measures 195 cm high, 124 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, translating to a substantial scale suitable for domestic placement. Today, this mirror serves functionally as an overmantle above a fireplace or as a floor-standing mirror in a bedroom, dressing room, or grand hallway. It anchors room schemes inspired by a French chateau aesthetic, bringing period character and reflective light into both traditional and contemporary interiors without dominating the surrounding architectural proportions.

A 19th-century French gilt mirror typically features a wooden frame coated in plaster gesso and embellished with gold leaf gilding. Designs often reflect Neoclassical, Louis XVI, or Napoleon III styles, incorporating delicate cresting, floral garlands, and beaded trim.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved timber framesoften pine or oaklayered with plaster gesso to create detailed mouldings. Real gold leaf was applied via water gilding, while the reflective surface was made from mercury-backed or early silvered glass.

Authentic period mirrors show age-appropriate wear, such as fine cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, red or grey clay bole showing through worn gilding, oxidation specks on the mirror glass, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Positioning a large gilt mirror above a fireplace mantel or leaning it against a wall in a hallway creates an immediate focal point. The warm metallic tones complement both period decor and contemporary, minimalist spaces by reflecting light and enhancing natural spatial depth.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, dry feather duster or gentle brush. Avoid using water, spray cleaners, or chemical solvents on gilded surfaces, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso and damage delicate gold leafing.
