This Regency giltwood overmantel mirror exemplifies 19th-century design through an imposing rectangular frame finished in original water gilding. The piece incorporates corner rosettes, floral mouldings, and fluted pilasters flanking the glass plate, alongside intricate scroll motifs and half-columns. The original foxed mercury glass plate provides an aged reflection, supported by original backboards behind the gilded gesso construction. The frame measures 92.5 cm high, 147.5 cm wide, and 11.5 cm deep. Suitable for placement above a mantel in a traditional or contemporary home, this antique mirror serves as a prominent focal point in a living room, dining space, or hallway. The gilded surface displays historical character through sensitive touch-ups, while the construction preserves the authentic craftsmanship of the period.

FAQs

Overmantel mirrors became prominent architectural elements in the 18th and 19th centuries, designed specifically to sit above fireplace hearths. They served both functional and aesthetic purposes by reflecting candlelight and hearth warmth to brighten reception rooms while demonstrating craftsmanship through gilded wood frames.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber frames, often pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso. Thin sheets of gold leaf were applied over the gesso using oil or water gilding techniques, surrounding silvered plate glass.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, natural wear or slight cracking in the gesso, and areas of red or yellow clay bole showing through where the gold leaf has worn. Original mirror plates may also display light foxing or subtle silvering imperfections.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece or atop a low console table to draw the eye upwards. Pair it with neutral wall colours and contemporary minimalist decor to allow the warm gold tones and detailed carving to serve as a focal point.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid applying water, chemical glass cleaners, or liquid solvents directly to the gilding, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso and detach the delicate gold leaf.
