Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century gilt overmantel mirror is a substantial wall-mounted mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. Characterised by arched or rectangular frames constructed from carved wood and moulded gesso, these pieces were coated in gold leaf to reflect candlelight and enhance living room proportions.

Traditional construction involved a softwood base frame carved or moulded with gesso plaster details, coated in a clay base known as bole, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding. The reflective mirror pane was made using silvered glass or earlier mercury-amalgam processes backed by pine timber panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible signs of age including minor oxidisation or desilverisation (foxing) on the glass, a reddish clay bole layer showing through worn gilding, and solid timber backboards held by antique nails. Modern reproductions typically use modern screws, synthetic resins, or uniform spray-painted gold finishes.

Positioning an overmantel mirror above a original fireplace or a contemporary hallway console table creates an immediate architectural focal point. The reflective surface introduces natural light into darker spaces while contrasting traditional gilding against modern neutral paint schemes.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or camel hair brush, taking care around fragile gesso moulding. Never apply liquid spray cleaners, water, or commercial polishes directly to gold leaf, as moisture dissolves water-gilded finishes.
