Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian overmantel mirrors gained immense popularity during the mid-to-late 19th century in Britain. Designed specifically to rest on fireplace mantels, these mirrors served to reflect both daylight and candlelight, brightening formal drawing rooms and displaying household prestige.

Antique gilt mirrors are typically constructed with a carved wooden frame, often pine or lime, coated with gesso moulding and finished with genuine gold leaf application. The back is encased with pine boards, and the glass traditionally features mercury silvering or early silver nitrate backing.

Authentic pieces feature original wooden backboards with natural shrinkage, hand-carved gesso details showing fine craquelure, and subtle wear to the gilding revealing the underlying reddish clay bole. Original glass often displays gentle oxidisation or minor silvering degradation.

An overmantel mirror functions well positioned above a traditional fireplace hearth or mounted above a contemporary console table. Placing the mirror opposite windows maximises light distribution throughout the room, creating an effective focal point.

Dust gilt frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid damaging delicacy of the gold leaf and gesso. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes on the gilded areas, and clean glass surfaces carefully using a microfibre cloth damp with water.
